Although Strange Journey Volume Three does not reach the extremely high peaks of albums like A Piece of Strange and Oneirology, it is still an engrossing album. This is the best offering from the Strange Journey series thus far. Natti and Deacon are great lyrically, and the variety of rapping styles from the guests, which includes other talented rappers such as Blu, Masta Ace, Aesop Rock, Apathy Zion I and J-Live, keeps the listener on their toes. Kno's work behind the boards continues to be fantastic - every song here is good, with the exception of "Drunk Dial".
"The Morning" is an album highlight with dark production, a scorcher of an opener verse from Psalm One, and a fantastic beat change for Blu's verse. "Castles" is another stunner that is structured around a hypnotizing vocal sample. The song ends with an absolutely incredible Aesop Rock verse. Even though the guests are very impressive, this is not to say that CunninLynguists are consistently out-rapped. Both Deacon and Natti shine in the beautiful melancholy of "In The City" and the spacey "Dying Breed". Like the rest of this series, Strange Journey Volume Three isn't as conceptually driven as their other albums, but it is still a fine recording that should be strongly recommended to CunninLynguists fans and newcomers alike.
