Tricot - 真っ黒 (Makkuro) [2020]

Tricot is an extremely consistent band. Outside of "危なくなく無い街へ" a pop-ballad track that surprisingly lacks the main drawing elements of the rock group, Makkuro does not do much in the way of pushing further into the poppier territory that 3 flirted with. While "危なくなく無い街へ" stands out as the album's nadir, thankfully nothing else on the tracklist resembles it. The entire album is high quality overall, but the first half of Makkuro has the band pushing their math-rock sound to new heights.

"右脳左脳" is an incredible song with a fantastic groove and vocals that are more interested in extended notes than the track before it, "混ぜるな危険", a short tune that attacks with loud energetic guitar riffs over an authoritative bass line. Tricot is lively all throughout this record. The high-quality drumming shines on "みてて", as the guitars hit hard with great chords and sparse riffs. This is immediately followed by "秘蜜", wherein the band presents a significantly darker atmosphere accompanied by intricate guitar work and a fine melancholic vocal melody.

Even though what follows on the album does not often feel like an update, it still maintains the high-performance level that the band has become known for. The way "順風満帆" progresses and releases its energy is classic Tricot at this point. "ワンシーズン" is much more subtle, leaving more space for the bass' great tone to shine before it bursts to life with guitars and briefly delivers a unique groove. It's hard to rank their albums because the band has such a strong discography, but it wouldn't be outlandish to say that Makkuro is in the running to be their best yet.
