Moonchild is a Neo-Soul trio based in Los Angeles, California. Their sound is very jazzy, often featuring great keyboard playing that dominates stellar tracks of Please Rewind such as "The Truth" or "All The Joy". The trio's sound is clearly heavily influenced by Neo-Soul greats such as Erykah Badu. They are students of the mellow jazz and funk-based Neo-Soul sound that was making waves in the second half of the 90s and early 2000s.
Please Rewind is a step up in every aspect from Moonchild's debut, Be Free. Although Be Free was a solid effort, it lacked the front to back consistency in quality of Please Rewind. There are no bad tracks on this album, even the blandest song, "Nobody", is beautiful. The instrumentation is wonderful, with trumpet, sax, keyboard, bass, and strings that all sound great, but the highlight is the singer, Amber Navran. She has a heavenly voice - the vocal equivalent to a nice summer breeze. Please Rewind is not anywhere close to reinventing the Neo-Soul wheel, but it's a very well-done album that will be extremely easy to listen to for fans of the genre.
